Description
Announcing our August Mentor Text Book Club!
Every month we will dig into a middle grade or young adult novel together, focusing on a specific craft aspect.
August’s book is ONE OF US IS LYING by Karen McManus ✨
Author Nancy Tandon and Book Coach Christy Yaros will lead our discussions.
Learning Objectives/Outcomes
You should read the book before the meeting.
We’ll explore the essential elements of problem and solution. We’ll work together to dissect and discuss how McManus reveals the clues to the solution in a logical way the reader can follow without giving away the ending too soon.
Other things to keep in mind: techniques for plotting an engaging story, developing compelling characters, building tension, crafting authentic dialogue, utilizing multiple perspectives, and weaving in meaningful themes. The mystery genre just provides a unique framework for showcasing these universal elements of strong writing.
Note: Jessica Brody just released Save the Cat! Writes a Young Adult Novel, and there is a beatsheet for One of Us is Lying. We can also discuss that.
Who is this for?
Anyone writing a novel for young readers, including chapter books, middle grade, and young adult who wants to learn how to use published novels to improve their craft.
Format
An online presentation on Zoom with hands-on exercises and a Q&A at the end.
